History

Founded in 1939 and then reformed in 1948 to coincide with the NHS Act and support the operation of the free health service. The new national organisation became the League of Friends but Newbury, although a founder member, retained its pre-war title Newbury Hospitals ‘Helpers’ League.

This title remained until the new West Berkshire Community Hospital opened in February 2004, when, with Charity Commissioners permission, the name was changed to the West Berkshire Community Hospital League of Friends.
